Delfland Water Board seeks solutions for water shortages in greenhouse horticulture
The Delfland Water Board and the organization Greenhouse Horticulture Netherlands have launched a joint study into the water shortage in the region. The two parties aim to find short-term solutions to secure the water supply for greenhouse horticulture. This is necessary due to persistent drought and increasing pressure on available water sources.
In the Delfland region, greenhouse horticulture is a highly important economic sector. This sector consumes large amounts of water for the cultivation of vegetables, flowers, and plants. Due to changing weather conditions, such as longer periods of drought, it is becoming increasingly difficult for growers to obtain sufficient, high-quality water. The shortage poses a risk to the business operations of many entrepreneurs.
The study focuses on various ways to use water more efficiently. Among other things, it is looking at water reuse, rainwater harvesting, and improving water quality. It is also investigating how the water system in the region can be better adapted to the needs of the horticultural sector during dry periods.
The results of this study are intended to lead to a concrete action plan. The goal is to ensure a sustainable and reliable water supply for greenhouse horticulture in Delfland in the future as well. Both parties emphasize that cooperation is essential to face the challenges of the changing climate.
