Dutch government working on its own secure cloud
The Dutch government is currently in the process of designing its own 'sovereign' cloud. This is a digital platform over which the government has full control. The goal of this project is to become less dependent on large foreign technology companies and to increase the security of government data.
At present, the government uses servers from large international companies for many digital services. This entails risks, as the data can be stored on servers abroad. With its own cloud, the government wants to ensure that sensitive information, such as citizens' personal data, always remains within Dutch borders and is under strict control.
The design for this cloud must meet stringent requirements regarding privacy and digital security. The government wants the data centers that host the cloud to be fully managed in-house or under direct supervision. This will allow the government to better guarantee that the data is well-protected against hackers and other digital threats.
This project is an important step in the digitalization of the Dutch government. The process is still in the design phase, but the plan shows that digital sovereignty has become a priority. In the coming period, it will become clear how exactly the government intends to set up this system and when it can be put into use.
