The battle for the cloud: What do AWS, Azure, and Google mean for the Netherlands?
More and more Dutch companies and government institutions are storing their data in the 'cloud'. The market is dominated by three major international players: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. These companies offer powerful computer systems that allow organizations to run their digital services without having to maintain large servers themselves.
Although the three providers are very similar, there are important differences in their offerings. AWS is known as the largest player with a very extensive range of tools. Microsoft Azure is often the first choice for companies that already make heavy use of Windows software. Google Cloud distinguishes itself primarily through its strong technologies in the field of artificial intelligence and data analysis.
For Dutch users, it is not just the price or speed that matters, but also the security and location of the data. Because European privacy legislation (GDPR) is strict, companies must pay close attention to where their information is stored. The three major providers have therefore opened data centers in or near the Netherlands to meet the local demand for data sovereignty.
The choice of a specific cloud provider ultimately depends on an organization's needs. Some companies choose a single supplier, while others use a combination of different services to remain flexible. These technological developments have a major impact on how Dutch companies innovate and ensure their digital security.
