Record number of tick bites reported in the Netherlands this summer
This summer, a remarkably high number of tick bites have been reported in the Netherlands. According to recent figures from Tekenradar.nl, the number of bites has risen to a peak. This means that people who have been out in nature have come into contact with these small creatures more often than usual.
Ticks are mainly found in forests, dunes, and parks, but also in gardens with tall grass or shrubs. When the weather is warm and humid, ticks are extra active. Experts therefore advise always being cautious during a walk in green areas.
It is important to always check your body for ticks after a visit to nature. If you find a tick, it should be removed as quickly as possible and in the correct way. This reduces the risk of diseases, such as Lyme disease, which can be transmitted by ticks.
The increase in the number of reports emphasizes that vigilance remains necessary. Although the summer period is slowly coming to an end, ticks remain active in the autumn as long as the temperature is not too low. Wearing covering clothing and using an insect repellent containing DEET can help to prevent bites.
