Public transport in the Netherlands brought to a standstill by national strike
On June 24, public transport throughout the Netherlands came to a complete standstill for several hours. Between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM, no trains, buses, trams, or metros were running. This action was organized by employees in the transport sector to draw attention to their working conditions.
The strike caused major disruption for travelers who had to head out early for work or appointments. Many people who rely on public transport had to look for alternatives, such as the car or the bicycle, to reach their destination. NS and other transport operators advised travelers to postpone their journeys.
Trade unions and employees in the transport sector decided on this action to reinforce their demands. They believe that better agreements need to be reached regarding, among other things, pension schemes and workload. According to the activists, the strike is necessary to make it clear to politicians and employers that the current situation is no longer sustainable for many employees.
After 8:00 AM, public transport across the country was slowly restarted. However, it took some time before the schedule was running completely on time again. It remains unclear whether more actions will follow in the future if no agreement is reached between the parties involved.
