Amsterdam UMC must pay damages following serious medical error
Amsterdam UMC must pay substantial damages to a patient due to a serious medical error. For years, the hospital failed to share a positive hepatitis C test result with the man. As a result, the patient remained unaware of his health situation for a long time.
The man only discovered the diagnosis 26 years after the test. During that period, he did not receive the necessary medical care required for his condition. The failure to communicate these important test results is viewed by experts as a very serious shortcoming in the provision of care.
Due to the significant impact on his life, the case has been classified in the 'heaviest category' for personal injury. This means that the compensation the hospital must pay is very high. The hospital has since acknowledged that there was an error in the administrative processing of the medical records.
This case once again raises questions about the quality of patient records and communication in large Dutch hospitals. Amsterdam UMC has indicated that it will investigate internal procedures to prevent such errors in the future. For the patient, however, this acknowledgment comes after more than two decades of waiting.
