National Heat Plan in effect across much of the Netherlands
The RIVM has activated the National Heat Plan for a large part of the Netherlands. Temperatures will rise significantly this weekend, especially in the south and center of the country. The plan is intended to protect vulnerable groups from the effects of the heat.
The warning applies to the provinces of Zeeland, Zuid-Holland, Noord-Brabant, Limburg, Utrecht, Gelderland, and Overijssel. It will be very warm in these areas over the coming days. The Heat Plan comes into effect when there is a high probability of persistent warm weather, which carries health risks.
The RIVM advises people in these provinces to drink plenty of water and wear thin clothing. It is also important to stay out of direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day. For the elderly, the chronically ill, and people who are overweight, the heat is extra dangerous because they are often less able to regulate their body temperature.
In addition to drinking and seeking shade, it is wise to limit heavy physical exertion. Exercising or doing heavy work outdoors can lead to dehydration or heatstroke. The Heat Plan also calls on people to look out for one another, especially neighbors or family members who live alone and may need help.
Although many people enjoy the sunny weather, caution is therefore advised. Authorities continue to monitor the weather forecast closely. As soon as temperatures drop back to a normal level for the time of year, the National Heat Plan will be terminated.
