Dutch government working on its own secure cloud environment
The Dutch government is currently in the process of designing its own sovereign cloud environment. This project is intended to ensure that sensitive government information is securely stored and managed within national borders. The goal is to become less dependent on large foreign technology companies.
The new system will run on data centers that are owned by the government itself or managed by it. With this, The Hague aims to increase control over digital data and better protect the privacy of citizens. The government emphasizes that digital security is a top priority at a time when cyber threats are increasing.
By building its own cloud, the government can set stricter rules regarding access to data. This is especially important for information related to national security and the personal data of residents. The design is currently still in a preparatory phase.
The project aligns with broader European ambitions to strengthen digital autonomy. Many European countries are looking for ways to make their digital infrastructure less vulnerable to outside influence. In the coming period, it will become clear what the final design will look like and when the government will fully transition to this new system.
