Public transport in the Netherlands brought to a standstill by strike
On June 24, public transport throughout the Netherlands came to a standstill. Between 04:00 and 08:00, no trains, buses, trams, or metros were running. This caused major disruption for travelers who were on their way to work or school in the early morning.
The strike was organized by employees in the transport sector. They walked off the job to draw attention to their working conditions. Due to the action, thousands of vehicles remained in the depots and platforms across the country were empty.
The unions and employers in the sector have been in discussions about new agreements for some time. The Monday morning strike was a way for staff to reinforce their demands. According to the activists, more is needed to keep work in the sector attractive and sustainable.
After 08:00, public transport slowly began to get moving again. However, it took some time before the service was running fully according to schedule. Travelers were advised to keep a close eye on current travel information.
It is not yet clear whether more actions will follow in the future. Negotiations between the unions and the employers will continue in the coming period to reach a solution for the ongoing problems in the transport sector.
