Dutch flock to book holidays after Oranje's elimination
Dutch people are going on holiday in massive numbers this summer. Although prices for travel and accommodation are rising, many people are still choosing to head for the sun. A striking reason for the recent surge in bookings is the elimination of the Dutch national team from the major football tournament.
According to travel organizations, there was a clear peak in the number of bookings immediately after the Netherlands was knocked out of the tournament. Many supporters had postponed their holiday plans in the hope that the team would progress far. Now that Oranje is no longer competing, many people have decided to quickly book a trip to a sunny destination after all.
However, not everything is positive for the travel industry. Inflation and the high cost of living are influencing the holiday behavior of many people. Some Dutch citizens are choosing to stay at home this year or vacation closer to home. For them, the prices of flight tickets and hotels have simply become too high.
For those who do go abroad, countries around the Mediterranean remain very popular. Spain, Greece, and Turkey are still the favorite destinations. Travelers are primarily seeking the certainty of good weather, especially after the unsettled and rainy start to the summer in the Netherlands itself.
Despite the economic challenges, the need for relaxation remains high among the Dutch population. Whether it is a long-haul flight or a holiday in their own country, people find it important to get away for a while. The coming weeks will reveal whether the congestion at airports and on the roads is as significant as in previous years.
