Senate blocks faster increase in state pension age

The Senate has put a stop to the plans of the Jetten I cabinet to increase the state pension age (AOW) more rapidly. Consequently, the government's proposal to accelerate the rise in the retirement age cannot proceed. With this decision, the Senate has rejected a key component of the current cabinet's policy.

The increase in the state pension age is a sensitive topic in the Netherlands. The cabinet aimed to use this acceleration to guarantee the long-term sustainability of the pension system, given the aging population. However, there was insufficient support for this specific proposal in the Senate.

Opposition parties and other critics in the Senate expressed their concerns regarding the consequences for employees performing physically demanding work. They argued that a faster increase would be too burdensome for people approaching their retirement age. Due to the rejection, the current schedule for the rise in the state pension age remains unchanged for the time being.

The Senate's decision means that the cabinet must return to the drawing board. It is still unclear whether the government will come forward with an adjusted proposal or seek other ways to manage pension costs. For millions of Dutch citizens, the retirement date therefore remains as it was previously established for now.
