Public transport in the Netherlands brought to a standstill by strike
On June 24, public transport throughout the Netherlands was completely halted for several hours. Between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM, no trains, buses, trams, or subways were running. This caused a major disruption to the morning rush hour for thousands of travelers.
The strike was organized by employees in the transport sector. They walked off the job to draw attention to their working conditions and the political situation within the sector. Due to the action, commuters and students were unable to use public transport in the early morning.
The unions and the employees indicated that this action was necessary to reinforce their demands. Shutting down the network was a clear signal to employers and politicians. During the strike, most vehicles remained in the depots.
After 8:00 AM, public transport in the country was slowly restarted. However, it took some time before the service was running fully according to schedule again. Because of the strike, many travelers had to look for alternative transport, such as bicycles or cars.
