RIVM investigates presence of whooping cough in the Caribbean Netherlands

The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has conducted an important health study in the Caribbean Netherlands. Under the name PIENTER 3, researchers looked at the spread of various infectious diseases on the islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba. A specific component of this study was the presence of the bacterium that causes whooping cough.

The PIENTER studies are intended to measure how well the population is protected against diseases for which vaccinations are provided in the Netherlands. By analyzing blood samples, scientists can see whether people have built up antibodies. This provides a clear picture of general public health and the effectiveness of current vaccination programs on the islands, which are special municipalities of the Netherlands.

The results of the study show that the bacterium that causes whooping cough is indeed present in the Caribbean Netherlands. Whooping cough is a highly contagious disease that causes severe coughing fits. Especially for young babies who have not yet been (fully) vaccinated, the disease can be dangerous and sometimes even life-threatening. It is therefore essential for healthcare services to know how frequently the bacterium occurs.

The results from the Caribbean region are particularly relevant because there has recently been an increase in the number of whooping cough cases in the European part of the Netherlands as well. By comparing the data from the islands with that of the mainland, the RIVM gains a better insight into the spread of the bacterium within the entire Kingdom. This helps in creating targeted policies to prevent outbreaks.

The RIVM emphasizes that vaccination remains the most effective way to stay protected against the serious consequences of whooping cough. The information from the PIENTER 3 study is now being used to further improve medical advice for the residents of the islands. In this way, the government can better safeguard the health of all citizens in the Netherlands, both in Europe and in the Caribbean.
