Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport wants better care for women in the Netherlands
The Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) has announced that care for women in our country must improve. Experts Hanneke Takkenberg and Jeanine Roeters van Lennep are advocating for the creation of a so-called 'feminine ecosystem.' This is intended to ensure that medical treatments and research are better aligned with the specific needs of women.
According to the initiators, there is still too little attention in current healthcare for the biological differences between men and women. Much of the existing medical knowledge has historically been based on research involving men, which means that symptoms in women are sometimes recognized or treated differently. The new plan aims to close this gap by placing more focus on women-specific health issues.
However, there is also criticism regarding the implementation of this plan. Although the Ministry of VWS supports the ambitions, the financial responsibility is largely being placed on the healthcare sector itself. This means that hospitals and healthcare institutions must figure out for themselves how to pay for and organize these improvements within their current budgets.
The healthcare sector is responding cautiously to the plans. While the need for better women's healthcare is widely recognized, healthcare institutions are concerned about the additional workload and costs. It is therefore still unclear what the 'feminine ecosystem' will look like in practice and when patients will notice the first changes in the doctor's office.
