Dutch government wants to ban terrorist organizations more quickly
The Dutch government wants to be able to act more quickly against terrorist organizations. Minister of Justice and Security David van Weel has announced that he is investigating how this process can be accelerated. Currently, it sometimes takes a long time before a group is officially banned in the Netherlands.
At present, there are strict rules for banning an organization. This is important for the rule of law, but it can also entail risks. As long as a group is not officially banned, members can sometimes continue their activities. The minister believes that the government must be able to intervene more quickly to protect the safety of citizens.
Minister Van Weel is currently looking into various options for amending the law. He wants the government to be able to respond more directly to new threats. The goal is to place groups that use or promote violence on a blacklist more quickly. Once an organization is banned, it becomes much more difficult for them to raise money or recruit new members.
These plans are part of a broader approach to terrorism and extremism in the Netherlands. In the coming period, the minister will further develop his proposals and discuss them with parliament. It is not yet known exactly when the new rules will take effect, but the minister emphasizes that safety is the top priority.
