National Heat Plan in effect across large parts of the Netherlands

It will be very hot in the Netherlands this weekend. For this reason, the National Heat Plan will be in effect starting Saturday in a large part of the country. The RIVM has made this decision because temperatures are rising significantly and the heat may persist for several days.

The plan applies specifically to the provinces in the central and southern Netherlands. These include Zeeland, South Holland, North Brabant, Limburg, Utrecht, Gelderland, and Overijssel. In the north of the country, the plan is not yet necessary, as temperatures there remain slightly lower due to a sea breeze.

The National Heat Plan is intended to warn people about the risks of prolonged heat. Heat can be dangerous for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, people with chronic illnesses, and young children. The plan calls on healthcare institutions and informal caregivers to keep an extra close eye on these individuals.

Experts advise everyone to take precautions during these hot days. It is important to drink enough water, even if you do not feel thirsty. Additionally, it is wise to wear light clothing and avoid the bright sun as much as possible between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Ideally, stay in the shade or in a cool room.

While many people will enjoy the sunny summer weather, caution is therefore advised. The government and weather services are monitoring the situation closely. After the weekend, it is expected that the most extreme heat will gradually subside.
