OLVG starts trial for late-term abortions
The OLVG hospital in Amsterdam has begun a trial for performing late-term abortions. This concerns pregnancy terminations between the 22nd and 24th week. Although this medical procedure is legally permitted in the Netherlands, it remains a subject on which there are differing views within society and the medical world.
Until now, it was difficult for many women in the Netherlands to undergo an abortion after 22 weeks of pregnancy. Hospitals rarely performed these procedures, which sometimes forced women to travel abroad. With this new initiative, the OLVG aims to improve care for this specific group of patients and offer it closer to home.
The decision to terminate a pregnancy at this late stage is often a very profound choice for those involved. The hospital emphasizes that a careful procedure is followed for every request. The woman's medical and personal situation is examined extensively before approval is granted for the procedure.
The trial at the OLVG is being closely monitored by other healthcare institutions and politicians. It is a sensitive topic because it pushes the boundaries of what is medically and ethically possible. For the time being, the hospital will continue to evaluate the results of the trial to determine whether this care can become a permanent part of the Dutch healthcare offering in the future.
