General practitioners head to court: 'Focus should be on health, not on sickness'
Two Dutch general practitioners have announced that they intend to take the government to court. According to them, current healthcare policy is falling short because there is too much focus on treating people who are already ill, while too little is being invested in preventing diseases.
The doctors argue that the Dutch healthcare system is currently primarily a 'sickness system.' They believe the government should do more regarding prevention, such as encouraging a healthy lifestyle and improving the living environment. According to the GPs, the government is currently waiting too long to intervene, causing children and adults to become ill unnecessarily.
The legal step is intended to wake up politicians. The doctors hope that a judge can force the government to allocate more money and resources to preventive care. They emphasize that, in the long term, this is not only healthier for the population but can also reduce healthcare costs.
The Ministry of Health has not yet responded substantively to the announcement of the lawsuit. However, prevention has long been an important theme in the political discussion regarding the future of healthcare in the Netherlands. The outcome of this case could have major consequences for how Dutch healthcare is structured in the future.
