The Netherlands takes major steps in domestic technology and innovation

In the future, the Netherlands wants to be less dependent on technology from countries such as China and the United States. To achieve this, the government and the business community are increasingly investing in homegrown innovations. This is important for the economy, but also for the security of the country.

A key example of this is the opening of the MIND Tech Centre in Delft. In this new center, the Ministry of Defence and various companies are collaborating on modern technologies. They focus primarily on 'dual-use' innovations, such as drones. These are technologies that can be used for both military purposes and the daily lives of citizens.

However, there are also challenges on the path to technological independence. Recent research shows that knowledge about artificial intelligence (AI) among the Dutch can still be improved. Although 81 percent of people know what a 'deepfake' is, other AI terms are much less well-known. Additionally, there is a debate about money: large Dutch pension funds are still investing billions of euros in American tech giants instead of in local companies.

In addition to defense and AI, there is also a lot of focus on sustainability within the Dutch tech sector. The company Healix was recently named 'Dutch Tech Innovator 2026'. This company specializes in recycling plastic waste that is normally very difficult to process. Their success shows that the Netherlands has a strong position in the development of green technology.

All in all, the Dutch tech sector is showing a lot of movement. By focusing on domestic innovations in Delft and successes in the circular economy, the country is trying to chart an independent course. The coming years will reveal whether these investments and knowledge are enough to truly reduce dependence on foreign technology.
