Dutch tech sector: Innovation, awards, and major challenges

The technology sector in the Netherlands is in full swing. On one hand, there are great successes and new inventions to celebrate. On the other hand, experts are concerned about the future of the sector. The Netherlands is trying to find its own place in the global tech market, but in practice, this is not always easy.

A positive example of Dutch innovation is the company Healix. This company specializes in recycling plastic waste that is normally difficult to process. Healix recently won the prestigious 'Dutch Tech Innovator 2026' award. Work on the future is also well underway in Delft. In the new MIND Tech Centre, the Ministry of Defence and private companies are collaborating on technology that is useful for both military personnel and ordinary citizens.

However, there are also serious concerns about the position of the Netherlands. The tech sector is under pressure due to a shortage of technical talent and strict government policies. A notable point is the financing of the sector. Large Dutch pension funds have invested more than 50 billion euros in American tech giants. As a result, a lot of Dutch money goes to competitors in the United States, while local startups sometimes struggle to find sufficient investment.

The dependence on the United States is also clearly visible in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). OpenAI recently launched the powerful new model GPT-5.6, but access for European users is currently limited. At the same time, the shares of major tech companies on the stock market are volatile due to new plans from companies such as Meta. This shows how vulnerable the Dutch market is to changes among major American players.

For these reasons, experts advise the Dutch government to take more control. The Council for Culture, for example, believes that the Netherlands should decide for itself how AI is used in our society. According to experts, it is essential to invest more in domestic innovation and talent. Only in this way can the Netherlands become less dependent on foreign technology and build a strong, independent tech sector.
