No more spare tire in the trunk: these are the new rules

Many motorists in the Netherlands think they must always have a spare wheel in their trunk. This was indeed the rule in the past, but times have changed. Nowadays, you increasingly see new cars being delivered by the manufacturer without a spare tire.

According to automotive expert Niek Schenk, a spare wheel is no longer mandatory in almost all European countries. Legislation has been adapted to modern technology in recent years. In the Netherlands, you therefore do not have to worry about a fine if you do not have an extra wheel with you during a police check.

There are several reasons why car manufacturers no longer include spare tires as standard. Firstly, it saves a lot of space in the trunk, which can now be used for other items. Additionally, a car without a heavy wheel is lighter, which helps to save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions.

The quality of tires also plays a role. Modern tires are stronger than before, making the chance of a flat tire smaller. Instead of a large wheel, motorists now often receive a repair kit. This kit usually consists of an aerosol can with special foam and a small compressor to reinflate the tire.

With such a repair kit, you can temporarily seal a small hole in the tire. However, it is not a permanent solution; it is only intended to allow you to drive carefully to the nearest garage. In the case of a large tear in the tire, this remedy unfortunately does not work, and a tow truck will still be required.

Although it is not mandatory, it remains important to set off well-prepared. Before a long journey, for example abroad, always check whether you have a repair kit or a spare wheel in the car. This way, you avoid having to wait for a long time by the side of the road in the event of a breakdown.
