Privacy debate: should AI glasses be banned?

There has been a great deal of commotion in the Netherlands regarding a new generation of smart glasses with built-in cameras and artificial intelligence (AI). The discussion flared up after it became known that women on beaches and at train stations were being filmed and harassed without their consent by people using this technology. The footage is sometimes analyzed instantly by the AI, allowing personal information about passersby to be quickly retrieved.

The victims feel unsafe and describe it as a serious breach of their privacy. Because the cameras in the glasses are often very small, it is nearly impossible for bystanders to tell if they are being filmed. This causes significant unrest in public spaces, where people expect to be able to move freely and unobserved.

Politicians and privacy experts are now calling for action. There is talk of a potential sales ban or stricter rules for the use of these devices in public. Critics of the glasses argue that the technology currently goes too far and that existing legislation provides insufficient protection against this type of abuse.

On the other hand, manufacturers emphasize that the glasses are intended for useful applications, such as navigation or translations. They point out that users are responsible for how they deploy the equipment themselves. Nevertheless, the pressure on the government to intervene before the use of smart glasses increases further is growing.

It is still unclear whether a ban will actually be implemented. In the coming months, the House of Representatives will continue to debate the balance between technological innovation and the right to privacy for all citizens in the Netherlands.
