Dutch government working on its own secure cloud
The Dutch government has begun designing its own 'sovereign cloud'. This is a digital system in which the government retains control over all stored data. The goal is to become less dependent on large foreign technology companies.
Currently, the government uses services from international companies for many digital tasks. By building its own cloud, The Hague aims to better protect the privacy of citizens. The system is also intended to ensure that sensitive government information remains secure within Dutch borders.
The plan is for the cloud to run on data centers that are entirely owned by the Dutch government. As a result, foreign parties will have no access to the data. This is an important step in the cabinet's digitalization strategy, in which security and digital independence are central.
The project is currently in the design phase. Experts are looking at the technical requirements and the costs of the system. It is not yet known when the government intends to fully transition to this new digital environment, but the plans mark a major change in how the Netherlands handles government data.
