New Zealand Detects First Case of H5 Bird Flu in Wellington
Health officials in New Zealand have confirmed the country’s first case of H5 bird flu. The virus was discovered in a single seabird found in the Wellington region. This is the first time this strain of the virus has been identified within New Zealand borders.
Despite the detection, the Ministry for Primary Industries and health authorities have stated that the risk to the general public remains very low. The virus was found in a wild bird, and there is currently no evidence of the disease spreading to humans or domestic poultry in the country.
Biosecurity experts are now working to monitor the situation closely. They are asking the public to report any sightings of sick or dead wild birds to the authorities immediately. Officials advise people not to touch or handle any dead birds they may find while walking on beaches or in parks.
While the risk is low, Pacific families and the wider community are encouraged to stay informed through official government channels. Health authorities will continue to test wild birds to ensure the virus does not spread further. For now, New Zealand remains free of the disease in its commercial poultry farms.
