Report: A gang targeting millionaires in the cryptocurrency field is behind the murder of a Dutch man in Spain
A gang specialized in stealing wealthy cryptocurrency traders has been linked to the murder of a 37-year-old Dutch crypto millionaire in Spain, according to the Spanish newspaper El País. The Spanish police announced the arrest of five suspects in the case.
The Dutchman was kidnapped in the city of Mijas in April while receiving the keys to a new property with his Colombian girlfriend. Four masked men dressed in black tried to force them into a car and shot the Dutch man in the leg during the process.
The police reported that the kidnappers took the couple to a house, where they were held for several hours while the criminals attempted to access their digital wallets to steal their crypto assets. The Colombian woman was later released, but the Dutch man remained missing.
He was found dead after 20 days in a forest in the city of Mijas, having died from a gunshot wound to his leg. The long search ended with this tragic conclusion that shocked the international cryptocurrency community.
Authorities in Málaga confirmed the arrest of five individuals linked to kidnapping and murder. Charges have also been brought against four others in Denmark, two of whom were already in custody for similar crimes. The suspects face charges of murder, deprivation of liberty, armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms, and belonging to a criminal organization.
