King Harald V has died
The Norwegian Royal House has confirmed that King Harald V has passed away. The King died on Friday at Oslo University Hospital at the age of 89. He had been hospitalized for eleven days before he passed away peacefully.
King Harald V had been the King of Norway since 1991. He ascended to the throne following his father, King Olav V. Throughout his 33 years as monarch, he was a central figure in Norwegian society and was highly respected for his role as a unifying figure for the nation.
It is expected that there will be commemorations across the country in the coming days. Many Norwegians have already begun to show their grief by laying flowers at the Royal Palace in Oslo. Flags on public buildings will be flown at half-mast as a sign of respect for the late King.
Following the King's passing, Crown Prince Haakon now assumes the role of Norway's head of state. The Norwegian people are now entering a period of mourning and reflection on King Harald's long reign and his significance to Norway.
