Large power deficit in Central Norway causes concern
Central Norway is facing a challenging situation regarding energy supply. So far in 2026, the region has a power deficit of 3.3 terawatt-hours. This figure is equivalent to the total electricity consumption of all detached houses in the entire region.
Experts point out that the increasing establishment of data centers is one of the main reasons for the high consumption. Data centers require very large amounts of electric power to operate, which puts significant pressure on the existing power grid in Trøndelag and the surrounding areas.
The situation has led to a debate about how the region should prioritize its electricity in the future. Many fear that the lack of available energy could hinder new industrial establishments and harm economic development in the region if good solutions are not found quickly.
Warnings are now being issued that a lack of facilitation for energy production and infrastructure could have serious consequences for Trøndelag. The discussion regarding the balance between industrial development and energy access will therefore become an important topic for decision-makers in the time to come.
