New income requirements create uncertainty for Ukrainian refugees
The government has introduced new income requirements for individuals wishing to apply for permanent residency in Norway. These changes are now having significant consequences for thousands of Ukrainian refugees who have settled in the country following the outbreak of the war.
Although more than half of the Ukrainian refugees have already found employment, many are finding the new requirements difficult to meet. The challenge often lies in the fact that many work in part-time positions or have salary levels that do not reach the authorities' new thresholds for permanent residency.
Many refugees are now expressing great uncertainty about their future in Norway. The situation is demanding because they want to contribute to society through work, but feel that the regulations make it difficult to obtain the security that a permanent residence permit provides.
The authorities emphasize that the income requirements are intended to ensure integration and financial independence. At the same time, organizations working with refugees point out that the strict requirements may be counterproductive if they prevent people who are already employed from staying.
The debate over the requirements is now continuing within the political environment. There is great anticipation regarding whether the government will make exceptions or adjust the rules to help groups that are in a vulnerable situation.
