Increased focus on security in Northern Norway following a changed global landscape
The security policy situation in the High North has changed significantly in recent years. According to experts, the divide between Northern Norway and Southern Norway has become more pronounced as a result of the increased tension between Russia and the West.
The development began in earnest with Russia's annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014. Since then, the full-scale invasion of Ukraine has contributed to Northern Norway taking on an even more central role in Norwegian and allied defense policy.
Experts now point out that the justification for investment in the north must change. It is no longer just a matter of local industrial development, but of national security and preparedness in an area that borders directly on Russia.
This new reality requires both politicians and residents in the north to understand their strategic importance. The discussion on how best to manage and protect the High North will therefore characterize the political debate in Norway in the time ahead.
