Gjedrem Committee proposes new rules for tech giants
A public committee led by former central bank governor Svein Gjedrem has presented a new report on how Norway should relate to large technology companies. The committee has assessed whether there is a need for stricter national regulation of players such as Google, Meta, and Apple.
The committee's conclusion is that they do not wish to introduce strict, Norway-specific rules for these companies. The committee believes that Norway should follow the common European rules that are already under development within the EU. This is intended to ensure that technology companies operate under equal framework conditions throughout Europe.
The experts on the committee point out that Norway is a small market. If Norway creates its own strict rules, it could lead to international companies choosing to limit their services for Norwegian users. By relying on EU regulations, Norway can still influence development without risking negative consequences for Norwegian consumers.
The debate regarding tech giants has been ongoing for a long time, and many are concerned about how these companies handle privacy and competition. Nevertheless, the committee believes that cooperation with other countries is the most effective strategy for regulating global tech giants.
The government will now consider the committee's proposals. The report will form the basis for further political discussions on how Norway should balance the need for strict control with the desire to have access to modern digital services.
