Sharp increase in electricity consumption for Norwegian data centers
New figures show that data centers in Norway are using significantly more electricity than before. In 2025, these centers accounted for 2.26 percent of the country's total electricity consumption. This is a marked increase compared to 2022, when the figure was much lower.
The development means that the electricity consumption of data centers has almost quadrupled in just three years. This growth follows the increasing digitalization of society, where the need for data storage and processing is constantly growing.
Data centers are necessary for us to be able to use digital services, such as movie streaming, cloud services, and artificial intelligence. At the same time, the high electricity consumption is sparking debate about how Norway should manage its energy resources in the future.
The authorities and energy companies are now closely monitoring the development. The question is how to balance the need for modern technology with the goal of sustainable energy use for the entire population.
