New fiber optic cable to ensure better internet for Svalbard
The American company Ciena has been selected as the supplier to build a new fiber optic cable between the Norwegian mainland and Svalbard. This is an important project to ensure stable and fast digital communication for the archipelago in the north.
In addition to laying a brand new cable, the company will also upgrade the existing infrastructure already in use. The work is necessary because the need for data capacity has increased significantly in recent years, both for the population and for the research communities on Svalbard.
Svalbard is currently dependent on fiber optic cables to communicate with the rest of the world. A stable connection is crucial for everything from the daily operation of society in Longyearbyen to important scientific work being carried out in the Arctic.
The project is part of a larger initiative to strengthen digital security and preparedness in the northern regions. With the new technology from Ciena, Svalbard will receive a more modern and robust solution for the future.
