West Nile virus warning: What you need to know
Health experts have recently issued a warning regarding the West Nile virus. Although the virus rarely leads to serious illness, it is important to be aware of the risk, especially for those planning trips to areas where the virus is more prevalent.
The West Nile virus is primarily spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Most people who become infected notice no symptoms or experience only mild ailments similar to a common flu. This includes fever, headache, and fatigue.
In very rare cases, however, the virus can lead to more serious complications. This can include meningitis, which in the worst cases can be fatal. Elderly people and individuals with a weakened immune system are most at risk of becoming seriously ill.
Currently, there is no specific vaccine or treatment for the West Nile virus for humans. Therefore, prevention is the most important measure. This involves using insect repellent, covering the skin with clothing, and using mosquito netting when staying in areas with many mosquitoes.
Although the risk of becoming infected in Norway is very low, it is wise to be aware if traveling to warmer regions. If you suspect an infection after traveling abroad, you should contact a doctor for advice and follow-up.
