Debate on electricity usage: Data centers versus traditional industry

New figures from Statistics Norway (SSB) have sparked a debate on how Norway should use its limited electrical power. The discussion concerns whether electricity should go to data centers or to traditional, power-intensive industry.

Figures from 2023 show a clear difference in value creation. According to SSB, data centers created 587 kroner in value per megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity. By comparison, the power-intensive industry created 913 kroner per MWh.

This means that traditional industry generates more economic value for each unit of electricity used. Many therefore believe that the authorities should prioritize industrial jobs over data centers when granting concessions for power access in the future.

At the same time, data centers are an important part of the digital infrastructure in society. They are necessary for data storage, artificial intelligence, and other modern technological services. The challenge for politicians will be to find a balance between the need for digital growth and the desire for the greatest possible value creation from the country's natural resources.

The question of power distribution will likely characterize the political debate in the time to come. How Norway manages its renewable energy will have great significance for both the labor market and the green transition in the years ahead.
