Russian ambassador warns Norway about NATO cooperation
The Russian ambassador to Norway, Nikolaj Podguzov, has made strong statements regarding Norway's role in NATO. He believes that Norway is increasingly functioning as a base for military operations directed against Russia.
Podguzov claims that this creates a serious risk to security in the High North. According to the ambassador, the close military cooperation between Norway and NATO is leading to increased tension in the relationship between the two neighboring countries.
Norwegian authorities have repeatedly emphasized that NATO membership is defensive. Norway wishes to maintain a predictable policy toward Russia, while simultaneously upholding its obligations to the defense alliance.
The situation in the High North is characterized by a more demanding security policy landscape. Dialogue between Norway and Russia is currently limited, and the ambassador's statements demonstrate how differently the parties view the current developments in the region.
