New technology could make Norwegian high-speed vessels more environmentally friendly
High-speed catamarans are currently known for having high greenhouse gas emissions. Now, however, a new technological solution could help make these vessels far more environmentally friendly in the future.
The challenge with today's high-speed vessels is that they require a lot of energy to maintain high speeds. By utilizing battery technology and specially designed underwater wings, the boats can lift themselves above the sea surface. This significantly reduces water resistance.
Norwegian technology is central to this work. By using wings, also known as "hydrofoils," the vessels can use less power to move forward. This makes it possible to replace traditional diesel engines with electric batteries without compromising speed or range.
If the technology is adopted on a large scale, it could lead to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from public sea transport along the Norwegian coast. This is an important step toward making the transport sector in Norway greener.
