How many lives did the Norwegian civil wars cost?
Norwegian history is characterized by a long and dramatic period known as the civil war era. Historians generally consider this period to have lasted for 110 years, from 1130 to 1240. This was a time of great unrest and many conflicts over who should rule the country.
The period began when King Sigurd the Crusader died in 1130. After his death, disagreement quickly arose regarding the right of succession to the Norwegian throne. Several different pretenders to the throne fought for power, which led to a series of armed battles and alliances across the country.
Although we know a great deal about the political events, it is difficult for researchers to say exactly how many people lost their lives in the battles. The sources from this time are often incomplete, and it is challenging to estimate the death tolls with certainty.
The civil war era came to an end in 1240, when King Haakon Haakonsson secured his position as sole king. This period was crucial for the development of the Norwegian monarchy and marked the end of a turbulent epoch in Norway's history.
