Debate on the future of industrial policy in Norway
An important debate is currently underway regarding how the Norwegian state should support the business sector. Several stakeholders, including the Association of Pharmaceutical Industry in Norway (LMI), believe that current schemes for industry-oriented measures are not working well enough to promote innovation and growth.
Leif Rune Skymoen, CEO of LMI, has recently expressed concern that the current system is too inefficient. He believes that support schemes are not reaching the companies that need them most and that there is a need for a thorough review of how the state utilizes its resources.
Critics point out that Norway needs a more targeted policy to remain internationally competitive. Particularly within the health and technology sectors, there is a desire for a more modern approach that can attract investment and create new jobs.
The discussion is largely about the balance between public support and private initiative. The goal is to create framework conditions that make it easier for Norwegian companies to develop new solutions, while ensuring that taxpayers' money is used in a responsible manner.
It is currently unclear what specific changes will be proposed by the authorities. However, the debate continues to shape the political landscape, as many believe that a change in industrial policy is necessary to secure future welfare in Norway.
