Government to introduce stricter rules for data centers
The Norwegian government is currently working on a new white paper that will change how data centers are regulated in the future. The goal of this work is to impose stricter requirements on companies that wish to establish themselves in the country.
Today, there is significant debate regarding how much electricity data centers consume. Many of these centers require enormous amounts of energy to power servers that store data for large international companies. The government therefore wants better control over how this energy is used.
The new rules are intended to ensure that data centers contribute more positively to Norwegian society. This could mean requirements that excess heat from the centers must be used for other purposes, such as heating homes or commercial buildings.
The authorities emphasize that they want a more sustainable development of this industry. It is important to find a balance between the need for digital infrastructure and the consideration of the country's electricity resources.
The white paper is expected to provide clearer guidelines for both municipalities and investors. This will make it easier to evaluate which data centers are desired in Norway in the years to come.
