Swedish election thriller: Narrow majority creates uncertainty
The Swedish election has developed into an extremely tight race between the two political blocs. After the votes were counted late in the evening, the forecasts showed that there was a difference of only 20,000 votes between the red-green and the center-right parties.
The red-green side currently appears to have a majority, but the lead is very slim. They lead by only a single seat in the Riksdag. This means that the result is so uncertain that it may take time before we know who will form the next Swedish government.
The situation in Sweden is being followed closely from Norway. As a neighboring country, Norway is dependent on stable political cooperation with Sweden, both in terms of trade, security, and common challenges in the Nordic region. A weak majority could lead to a demanding period of negotiations to find a solution that ensures the country has a functional government.
The election result shows that the voters are split almost down the middle. If the final result remains as close as the forecasts indicate, the battle for government power could continue for days or weeks. It is now up to the political parties to figure out how they will cooperate in a new and unpredictable parliamentary situation.
