Brandenburg in shock: AfD and BSW are obstructing the new elections

The Brandenburg state parliament rejected a proposal for new elections after the collapse of the only coalition between SPD and BSW in Germany, as both AfD and the Sara Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) voted against it together, leaving the SPD party in a weaker minority.

The coalition ended after the resignation of three members from BSW, prompting state president Dietmar Woidke (SPD) to indicate instability and a lack of commitment. Both AfD and BSW considered the dissolution of the coalition to ignore the will of the voters in the state elections of 2024.

The AfD's proposal to dissolve the parliament failed to gain the necessary majority, as it required two-thirds of the votes. Both the SPD and CDU opposed the proposal, while the BSW voted unanimously in favor of the AfD, indicating an increasing closeness between the two parties in key votes.

Both AfD and BSW previously collaborated to dismiss the Deputy President of the State Parliament, Julin Grun, but this attempt failed. BSW confirms that SPD has long been planning to ally with CDU, overriding voter preferences, and accuses SPD of deliberately stirring up disputes within the BSW group.

Dietmar Woidke opposes new elections and plans to temporarily govern as a minority, seeking coalition talks with the CDU, which will create a narrow majority. At the same time, tensions remain high as the AfD continues to challenge its classification as a confirmed right-wing extremist organization in Brandenburg.
