Peptide injections promoted on TikTok are potentially life-threatening

Injectable peptides promoted on TikTok by influencers for beauty and health may pose serious health risks, with experts warning they could be potentially life-threatening.

Research conducted by Pointer in collaboration with LUMC (Leiden University Medical Center) tested five peptide products sold online as “research chemicals.” Each sample came from a different webshop, revealing widespread inconsistencies.

Laboratory analysis showed that all tested peptides contained higher levels of active ingredients than stated on their labels, in some cases up to fourteen times more. Additionally, three of the products contained undisclosed substances not mentioned by sellers.

These peptides are often marketed with disclaimers as research products to bypass regulations, a tactic also used in the sale of designer drugs. Despite their growing popularity online, experts warn that these substances have not been sufficiently studied for safe human use.

Peter de Keizer, a biologist at UMC Utrecht, described using such injections as “Russian roulette,” emphasizing that while some peptides may be beneficial, others can be harmful without proper research and regulation.

Peptides are naturally occurring short protein chains in the body and are commonly used in skincare. However, they are increasingly being sold online for injection purposes, often marketed for anti-aging or weight loss benefits.

Authorities have already received reports of adverse effects. Lareb (Adverse Reactions Centre) confirmed at least one case where a user required intensive care after using peptides. The IGJ (Health and Youth Care Inspectorate) and NVWA (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) have launched investigations into the issue.

Following the findings, one webshop has shut down, while several others were taken offline. However, some sellers continue operating through alternative platforms such as Telegram, raising concerns about ongoing risks to consumers.
