European Union warns Pakistan to improve human rights situation
In a recent report, the European Union has warned Pakistan that if the human rights situation in the country does not improve, it could lose trade benefits. The report specifically expresses concern over the issues of missing persons in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
According to the report, if Pakistan does not improve its human rights record, it risks losing the tariff relief (tax exemptions) provided by the European Union. This preferential package is worth approximately $837 million, which is of vital importance to the Pakistani economy.
The European Union states that trade facilities are dependent on the implementation of international human rights standards. European officials have urged the Pakistani government to take concrete steps to resolve the issues of missing persons in order to maintain trade relations.
This situation could become a major economic challenge for Pakistan because the European market is very important for Pakistani exports. The Government of Pakistan must now adopt a comprehensive strategy to address these international concerns in order to secure the trade privileges received by the country.
