Important decision by the international court regarding the water treaty between Pakistan and India
In an important decision, the International Court of Justice has stated that India must fully comply with the water-sharing treaty (Indus Waters Treaty) with Pakistan. This treaty, signed in 1960, holds legal status regarding the use of river waters between the two countries.
Pakistan's stance has been that the construction of hydropower projects by India on the Chenab and Jhelum rivers is a violation of this treaty. Pakistan fears that these projects could obstruct the flow of water, which could prove detrimental to Pakistan's agricultural sector.
On the other hand, India maintains that these projects are technically in accordance with the treaty and will not have a major impact on water flow. However, the international court has urged both countries to pursue diplomatic and legal avenues to resolve disputes so that the water supply in the region can be ensured.
The Indus Waters Treaty is a long-standing and important document between Pakistan and India. Experts say that respecting this treaty is essential for both countries because it is of utmost importance not only for water rights but also for peace and stability in the region.
Currently, the international community and international organizations are keeping an eye on this matter. It is hoped that both countries will address their concerns through dialogue in the spirit of this treaty so that a water crisis can be avoided in the future.
