Significant Changes and Challenges Facing Pakistan's Health Sector

Pakistan's health sector is currently witnessing several significant changes and challenges. While the government is introducing new digital systems and restrictions, medical staff are also protesting for their rights. These measures aim to curb the spread of diseases in the country and improve healthcare facilities.

The government has decided to ban the manufacture and sale of specific syringes across the country starting January 1 to prevent the spread of diseases like HIV and Hepatitis. Alongside this, the Punjab government has taken a major step by preparing digital health profiles for approximately 94 million citizens. This digital map will help the government obtain accurate information regarding citizens' health and demographics.

On the other hand, doctors in Karachi have protested against the non-payment of salaries and shortage of medicines, highlighting the weaknesses of the healthcare system. Recently, following reports of an alleged HIV outbreak in a Karachi hospital, the court has also sought a response from the relevant authorities. According to experts, Pakistan spends less than 3% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on health, which is significantly lower than the global average.

Globally, Pakistan is striving to increase cooperation in the health sector. An agreement has been signed with Indonesia for vaccine production and technical cooperation, while the World Health Organization (WHO) is providing medical supplies for millions of people to deal with potential flooding during the monsoon. Additionally, Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal has appealed to Pakistanis living in the United States to invest in the health sector.

All these efforts and challenges indicate that Pakistan needs major reforms in its healthcare system. Although new projects and international cooperation are welcome, more concrete steps are still needed to provide better medical facilities to the common man and to resolve the issues faced by doctors.
