Repatriation of Illegal Afghan Nationals from Pakistan Continues
The Government of Pakistan has launched a major operation to repatriate foreigners residing illegally in the country, particularly Afghan nationals. Under this decision, thousands of people have crossed the border into Afghanistan so far. The government states that this step has been taken in the broader national interest and to improve law and order.
According to Islamabad, the primary reason for this decision is national security concerns. Authorities claim that the presence of undocumented individuals was making it difficult to maintain the law and order situation in the country. Additionally, the burden on the national economy is also being cited as a significant reason for this decision.
Before the formal launch of this campaign, the government set a deadline during which illegally residing individuals were given the opportunity to leave the country voluntarily. Currently, large numbers of people are being seen at the Torkham and Chaman borders, returning with their belongings and families. Special arrangements have also been made by the administration at these borders.
Some international human rights organizations have expressed concern over the situation; however, Pakistani authorities maintain that this action is only against those who do not possess legal documentation. The government has repeatedly clarified that Afghan nationals who hold legal visas or registration cards will not be harassed.
Currently, this process is ongoing across the country, and temporary centers have been established in various cities from where people are being transported to the border after legal proceedings. The process is expected to accelerate in the coming days, with the aim of further stabilizing the security situation in Pakistan.
