New Developments in Pakistan's Economy and Trade: Focus on IT Exports and Islamic Banking
Signs of improvement in economic activities are becoming visible in Pakistan. According to recent reports, business confidence in the country has increased, and the government is striving to strengthen the economy through reforms in various sectors. The primary goal of these efforts is to increase exports and create new investment opportunities in the country to achieve economic stability.
In the technology sector, Pakistan is now seeking to gain access to the large US market. The government is preparing local companies to participate in US public sector contracts, which is expected to significantly increase IT exports. Alongside this, a major trade and investment exhibition (BITE 2026) is being held in Balochistan for the first time this month, aimed at promoting economic development and foreign investment in the province.
A major transformation is also being prepared in the financial sector. The government has developed a new strategy under which Pakistan's entire financial system will be completely transitioned to Islamic principles (Shariah) by 2028. On the other hand, to meet urgent energy needs, Pakistan has decided to purchase LNG on an emergency basis to maintain the supply of gas and electricity in the country.
Regarding international cooperation, a proposal has been made to create a joint portal between Pakistan and China in the pharmaceutical (pharma) sector. This platform will serve to connect manufacturers and investors from both countries. Furthermore, Uzbekistan has offered tax exemptions and other incentives to Pakistani investors to do business in their country, which is expected to benefit regional trade.
All these measures indicate that Pakistan is striving to modernize its economy. Although challenges such as energy prices and other administrative hurdles exist, these changes in the IT, agriculture, and financial sectors could play a significant role in improving the country's economic situation in the future.
