New Policy of Punjab Government: Fears of Flour Crisis in Twin Cities
Following the cancellation of wheat procurement permits by the Punjab government, fears of a flour crisis have emerged in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. This decision has made it difficult for flour mills to obtain wheat, which could directly impact ordinary citizens.
According to the Pakistan Flour Mills Association (PFMA), the government has tightened restrictions on the transportation of wheat. They state that due to the cancellation of procurement permits, the wheat stocks at mills are running out. If this situation persists, the supply of flour could be suspended.
Most of the requirements for the twin cities, namely Rawalpindi and Islamabad, are met from other regions of Punjab. Due to the disruption in supply, flour prices in the market are likely to increase. Shopkeepers and citizens have expressed deep concern over this situation, as flour is a basic necessity for every household.
Flour mill owners maintain that the free movement of wheat should be allowed so they can purchase according to their needs. They argue that government restrictions could not only lead to the closure of mills but also create an artificial shortage of flour in the market.
Experts say the government should find an immediate solution to this problem to ensure the provision of affordable and quality flour to the public. If timely measures are not taken, the flour shortage could become more severe in the coming days, increasing the hardships of the common man.
