BISP: Revelation of Aid Provision to Families of Individuals Traveling Abroad
A recent report by the Auditor General of Pakistan has revealed that some irregularities have been found in the financial assistance provided under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). According to the report, the spouses of 261 individuals who have traveled abroad are still receiving stipends.
These payments are being made under BISP's 'Kafaalat Programme'. The primary objective of this program is to provide financial assistance to the country's poor and deserving families so they can meet their basic needs. However, the audit report has brought to light that the spouses of these beneficiaries traveled abroad, which raises questions about the program's eligibility criteria.
According to the rules, individuals who travel abroad are generally considered financially stable; therefore, their families are no longer entitled to this assistance. In the report, the Auditor General emphasized the need to further improve and make the aid distribution system transparent to prevent the misuse of public funds.
The report also suggested that passport and immigration data should be linked with BISP records. This step will help authorities identify which families still meet the criteria for assistance and whose living conditions have improved.
This revelation highlights the importance of monitoring systems in government welfare programs. It is hoped that the relevant authorities will take immediate action in light of this report to ensure that funds reach only the truly deserving and that no one's rights are violated.
