Pakistan's Economy: Rising Trade Deficit and Foreign Investment Efforts
Pakistan's economy is currently at a critical juncture where, on one hand, the trade deficit is increasing, while on the other, the government is making vigorous efforts to bring in foreign investment. According to recent official data, the number of registered companies in the country has exceeded 300,000, which is a positive indicator of an increase in business activities.
Economic experts have expressed deep concern over Pakistan's growing trade deficit. During the last fiscal year, the country's exports remained approximately $4.87 billion below their set target, while the overall trade deficit reached $39.5 billion with a 22% increase. The decline in exports and the continuous rise in imports have increased pressure on the national economy, necessitating emergency measures to address the situation.
Amidst these economic challenges, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during his visit to Türkiye, invited major companies there to invest in Pakistan. Addressing a business conference held in Istanbul, he emphasized increasing cooperation in energy, infrastructure, and other key sectors. The government aims to provide better facilities to foreign investors to increase the inflow of dollars into the country and create new employment opportunities.
New changes are also being introduced in the technology sector, where the inclusion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in public sector projects is being considered. Experts believe that the use of modern technology will bring transparency and improvement to government operations. However, the automobile industry is facing difficulties due to the new tariff structure, as it has now become cheaper to import vehicles in a completely built-up condition rather than manufacturing them locally.
Overall, Pakistan needs solid policies to increase its exports and protect local industries. If the government succeeds in bringing in foreign investment and adopting modern technology, there is hope for improvement in the economic situation in the near future.
